A lot of the AC and furnace units installed during Keller’s growth years are now twenty to thirty years old, well past the typical service life of residential HVAC equipment. Some of those systems still run on R-22 refrigerant, which the EPA phased out of production entirely in 2020, making repairs on those older units more expensive and less practical every year. If your system falls into this category, replacement is often the more cost-effective option long term, even if the unit is technically still running.
Signs Your System May Be Nearing Replacement
- Your system is 15 years or older
- You’ve needed more than one or two repairs in the past year
- Your technician has mentioned the unit uses R-22 refrigerant
- Your energy bills have crept up despite normal usage
- The system struggles to keep up on the hottest or coldest days
